Lenny Moore

After a marvelous collegiate career at Penn State, Lenny Moore joined the Baltimore Colts in 1956, making an immediate impact while being named NFL Rookie of the Year.  His 12-year professional career with the Colts was nothing short of spectacular.

Moore was known as “Sputnik” for the fear he incited in opposing defenses, “The Reading Rocket” and “Lightning Lenny” for his unmatched speed, and “Spats” for the way he taped his shoes.  Among his many football accomplishments, Moore includes the following:

  • Winner of 2 NFL Championships
  • Member of the NFL’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team
  • Ranked by The Sporting News as one of the 100 Greatest Football Players of All-Time
  • Only player in NFL history with at least 40 receiving touchdowns and 40 rushing touchdowns
  • NFL Comeback Player of the Year
  • NFL Most Valuable Player
  • Scored a touchdown in 18 consecutive appearances, a record that stood for 40 years
  • Enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1975

Lenny Moore has also lived a Hall of Fame life.  His example in the Christian virtues of patience, long-suffering, compassion, brotherly kindness, love, faith, and service are worthy of emulation and merit special recognition.  A tireless advocate for youth, Moore teaches hope.  To young people he says, "To do whatever you want to do, to go wherever you want to go, to climb whatever you want to climb, it's there for you…It's all there for you."
